Skeletons in the Closet

By Michael Q. Pink

June 5, 2024

It was a long time coming…

Back in the ’70’s I would go to the Christian bookstore looking for Godly wisdom for sales and business. I was a young copier salesman lacking confidence and living on straight commission.

I needed all the help I could get. (Can you relate?)

I wanted to learn God’s ways, but I couldn’t find them in the marketplace.

People say that all truth is God’s truth and I believe that. That would suggest that you can learn from anyone. In many ways that’s true, but sometimes it feels like you’re picking through a garbage dump looking for something useful. You may find it, but something about it, still stinks.

One day, over 40 years ago, the passage in James 1:5 came to life for me. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”

I still remember where I was standing in the office when I took Him up on the offer and asked God for wisdom like He gave to Solomon. I wanted Him to give me some proverbs, just like Solomon got.

Right there in the foyer of the office as I was headed out to the parking lot, He gave me my very first Proverb… “In the valley of indecision lay the skeletal remains of many a worthy plan.”

So many of us have great ideas, even great plans, but we hesitate. We doubt. We stall. We find seemingly good reasons to not act on it today. We refine the idea, bounce it off of others. Then we revise it, second guess it and then perhaps start all over. Or worse, just abandon it.

Once I found out that God really meant what He said about Him being quite willing to give us wisdom, I began pursuing Him in earnest. I couldn’t believe that people didn’t think God had real, practical and highly effective strategies for succeeding in sales and business.

When I moved to the U.S. from Canada in 1985, I got another job selling copiers. It was January of 1986.

For the first time ever, I decided to mine through the Scriptures, beginning with Proverbs, looking for tactical and practical strategies I could apply to my new job.

Ninety days later, I was 350% of a quota I never saw anyone achieve in their first 90 days and I had closed 100% of my deals instead of the national average of 25%.

That was 38 years ago and I have learned so much about God and His ways since then. Not only the Biblical wisdom with things like the Moses Questioning Strategy or Negotiating Secrets of Paul, but also Natural Law and how it so perfectly models God’s business strategies.

I’ll be sharing these amazing truths in my Selling Among Wolves 3-Day CHALLENGE starting Tuesday night at 8 PM Eastern. If learning God’s ways for succeeding in the marketplace and fulfilling your calling in the world interests you, I invite you to register now for this very special event!
