The Recipe For Succeeding In Sales – Part 1

There are three things so wonderfully simple, even four that absolutely guarantee your success in sales. But who in your life has ever laid those out for you? You can find them in Proverbs, but they are like spices in a well-prepared meal… You know the meal tastes great and you know it has been wonderfully flavored but you’re not sure exactly what spices are in there, or in what proportion.

The good news is, that the Chef (God the Father) has sent the Maître d’ (the Holy Spirit) to share the recipe (Jesus Christ) with all who will wait on Him. In the end, when you have quieted your soul and downloaded the recipe of the day, you can then put into practice what you have received that you may taste and see that the Lord, He is good!

So when I tell you these four things that I have downloaded over the years of waiting on Him, seeking Him and learning His recipes, you won’t have a meal. You will have the recipe. Turning that into a well-prepared meal for yourself for succeeding in sales will require application, persistence and patience. Are you up for that?

The first of the four is knowledge

And the second is like unto it (skill) and it’s because of their similarity so many people miss it. You see, knowledge is information and the wise store it up. (Proverbs 10:14) Skill, at its basic level is simply “applied knowledge”… Applied in such a way that the physical manifestation now matches the written or theoretical description of reality.

You see, I have the knowledge of how to hunt with a bow and arrow and I am very good at it – I think. I’ve never done it before, but I did watch Robin Hood with Kevin Costner and it looks pretty easy. (smile) (Plus, I really did stay at the Holiday Inn for a few nights this week). Robin Hood and I both know how to hunt with a bow and arrow, but which of us would you depend on to bring home the evening meal? Not me, I hope. Not yet anyway.

So it is with succeeding in sales.

Man standing next to signpost to the Mount Everest Base Camp witThose of us who make a living helping others discover and understand their own true needs and then pairing them up with the value proposition that best satisfies those needs, usually know the fundamentals of the sales process (something I cover in the MPI Christian Business Institute). But knowing and successfully implementing are two different things.

“Knowing” is the picture of Mount Everest on your living room wall. Really “knowing” is the picture of you successfully climbing Mount Everest on your living room wall. Make sense?

Before I close out this blog I want to go back to Proverbs 10:14 where it says that the wise store up knowledge. First of all, the word for “wise” hear implies they are wise by reason of use. They are skillful people. In other words, a person of skill has learned how to store up knowledge.

What does it mean to store up knowledge?

Well, the word for “store up” means to literally hide it within like a treasure you can access and use as needed. That kind of storing up is NOT about memorization. It comes from application. It is about being able to shoot the arrow and hit the moving target, so you can feed your family. It’s about climbing Mount Everest and returning alive! That only comes by reason of use of the knowledge you acquired through reading, seminars, etc.

So if you’re part of the MPI Christian Business Institute when we open that up for Fall registration in August, you can be sure it will be of little value to you without application. But if you are one of my students, I won’t let you get away with that. I’m doing this to help you succeed. Wildly! Who really needs more head knowledge? We need successful application. That’s what makes this school massively different than anything I’ve ever seen offered anywhere else. If that sounds interesting to you, let me know you’re interested by going here.

Until next time, be fruitful and multiply!
