Have you ever felt like your circumstances contradicted God’s promises?
A few decades ago, I stood in my driveway and told the Lord that I knew it was impossible for Him to lie. And I knew that Philippians 4:19 says, “My God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus”, but then I added, “I’m not lying either, and it doesn’t look like my financial needs are being met.”
Have you ever been there???
I light heartedly proposed the idea of me coming to Heaven as a street sweeper, seeing as how the streets are paved with gold, and perhaps I could sweep up some gold dust.
I added, that if indeed Heaven’s streets are paved with gold, how could I get some of those immense riches in glory, down to earth, and in to my bank account so I could pay some very pressing bills?
I believe God loves honest inquiry, so I took a walk in the woods on our 3-acre property to inquire further. It was then that He asked me the strangest question as I stood by a big old cedar tree…
“WHERE DID THE TREE GET ITS WOOD FROM?”
(As you know from the last two nights of the Selling Among Wolves Challenge, God uses questions to teach you. When Job was downhearted, He asked Job 75 questions in a row!)
I remember thinking, “I’m not a botanist! I have no idea where the tree gets its wood from!”
So I pondered it, and realized that the metal in my watch and my car, etc., were dug out of the earth, having been in the ground since God put it there. But the wood, I realized, didn’t used to be buried in the ground.
The wood that made my dining room furniture and framed my house, used to be in a tree, but before that… well… it was nowhere!
Where in the world did the solid, beautiful, structurally sound wood, come from???
So the LORD said, “When you find out where the tree gets its wood from, you’ll understand how to get my riches in glory into spendable form.”
WOW! The challenge was on! I had to find out ASAP!
I got in my car and raced to the library. After all… God asked the question for a reason, and it wasn’t so He could learn something new.
Well, as it turns out, a tree needs seven elements to become a tree, starting of course with the seed. What I discovered that day, began a magnificent journey of discovery that answered my big question and I believe, will absolutely amaze you. (Well, it amazed me, but then, I’m easily amazed! 😊)
Years later, while praying in my living room, the Lord quite unexpectedly, invited me to go to Panama. When I asked Him why, He said it was to do with FINANCE.
I dropped what I was doing and booked a flight to Panama with my wife. We had neither one been there and we didn’t know a single person living south of Texas, let alone in Panama!
Turns out, that on that trip, He spoke again to me, while I was in the mountain town of Boquete. I was just minding my own business, walking from the cottage B&B to the building where breakfast was being served.
I was taking in the lushness and beauty of the area when He said… “Son, everything you need to learn about business, you can learn in the rainforest.”
He didn’t elaborate.
I googled two words, “rainforest” and “business”. The former CEO of Mitsubishi and another guy already wrote a book on that topic, so I realized there must be something to it.
That began a quest, still ongoing for nearly 20 years with 4 more trips to Panama, including the Smithsonian world headquarters for tropical research in the Panama Canal, the rainforests of Tobago and even the upper Amazon. (Also, Belize, Barbados and Costa Rica)
I thought the rainforest must have the best topsoil in the world because it is so lush, but on the contrary, it is shallow and acidic due to the rain constantly washing it away.
That begged the question… How does God get ABUNDANCE from scarcity?
The answer to that question is what every business owner, every entrepreneur, every person who has to make much out of little, needs to know!
