Christians often struggle to know if the thought they are having is from God or themselves, or even from the dark side. Hearing God’s voice gives us an incredible advantage in the marketplace that far outstrips AI.
It’s so important that in light of my recent YouTube video (27 Real Stories: How Hearing God Will Change Your Life) going viral with over 100,000 views so far, I’ve decided to offer free bi-weekly training on integrating the supernatural into everyday life starting this Thursday evening at 8 PM EST.
You can see the upcoming schedule of classes on my new website SupernaturalBusiness.com and download a free copy of 7 Ways to Know God’s VOICE For Your Life and Business when you register to attend any of the upcoming 30 minute LIVE meetings.
As I was pondering this issue yesterday, a thought arose within me. It was simply that “The Word of God is a tuning fork” for discerning whether something is of God or not.
It’s not the only way one can discern whether a thought or impression is from the Lord, but it is the first line of defense, so to speak.
I’m not a musician. I don’t play one on TikTok. So I researched the way a tuning fork actually functions to see if that was a God inspired thought or not. Here’s what I found…
A tuning fork works by vibrating at a specific, constant frequency when struck. Because the vibration is so stable and consistent, a tuning fork provides a pure tone that doesn’t waver.
The Tuning Fork Produces a Pure, Unchanging Tone
Just as a tuning fork vibrates at a precise, fixed frequency, the Word of God is unchanging and always true. “Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.” (Psalm 119:89)
“Even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, if they do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played?… And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle?” (1 Corinthians 14:7-8) This stresses the importance of clear, pure tones — just as the Word of God gives a distinct and reliable sound that we can align to.
Application: When you’re unsure whether a thought is from God or just your own mind, you “strike” the tuning fork — consult the Word — and see if the two resonate. If they don’t align, the thought is off-pitch.
The Fork Reveals Discord
If a note sounds close but is even slightly off, the dissonance becomes obvious next to the tuning fork’s tone.
Application: God’s Word exposes even subtle falsehoods or deceptions in our thoughts, impulses, or spiritual impressions. “For the word of God is living and active… discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
Only Objects “Tuned” to It Will Resonate
If another instrument or surface shares the tuning fork’s frequency, it will begin to vibrate in sympathy — this is called resonance. If it’s not in tune, it stays still. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27)
The sheep (true believers) resonate with the voice of the Shepherd. Like a piano string tuned to the fork, we “vibrate” in response when the true Shepherd speaks.
Application: The Holy Spirit in us (and a renewed mind) resonates with the truth of God’s Word. A foreign voice won’t create that resonance, and something will feel “off” to a Spirit-led believer.
The Fork Must Be Struck to Be Heard
A tuning fork doesn’t make a sound until it’s activated.
Application: We must engage the Word of God — not just keep it on the shelf. As we “strike” it (read, meditate, speak it), it gives off the clear tone we need to discern rightly.
Bottom Line: The more often a musician uses a tuning fork, the better they can recognize when something is off even without it. Likewise, the more deeply we know Scripture, the more easily we recognize God’s voice – and just as importantly, reject counterfeits. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” (John 10:27) That voice is always in tune with the Word because IT IS THE WORD OF GOD (who was made flesh and dwelt among us)
Michael-I have followed you for a very long time now. Thank you for this post. As a musician (sort of), I understand this and it resonates (see what I did there 😉) with me. We are in a season of transition and uncertain of where to go next. We are trying to be patient and wait for God to show us where He wants us to be, but some days are tough. Thank You for being an encouragement and a true source of Biblical wisdom! You are appreciated more than you know.
Thank you Missy. I so appreciate you posting a comment and sharing this blog with others.
Blessings, Michael
