So, here’s what happened next… (See yesterday’s email HERE about the crash!)
It was 1985 and I was selling financial services and more than I thought I needed my next breath, I needed to make $1,000!
Have you ever been in a tight spot like that?
What I’m about to tell you might make you uncomfortable, but I’m pretty sure it won’t make you anywhere near as uncomfortable and bewildered as I was.
I was walking down a bustling city street after being thrown out of a store for having the temerity to cold call them.
Nursing my hurt feelings, I headed to a family-owned restaurant to get a bite to eat and figure out what I could do next.
As I headed there, the Lord spoke to me and simply said, “No.”
I stopped in my tracks, considered that impression, decided it couldn’t be the Lord because I wasn’t doing anything morally wrong, and then continued walking.
A second time, He spoke clearly and once again said, “No.”
You have to understand… I wasn’t praying. I wasn’t asking Him if He thought it was a good restaurant or if I should go there. I was lost in my own thoughts, trying to figure out where I could make a sale and earn $1,000 ASAP!
I disregarded that unsolicited input and when I got to the restaurant and opened the door, He spoke forcefully… “NO!”
That completely baffled me.
But after hearing that 3 times, I decided to turn around, get in my car and head back closer to home.
Having no idea what to do, or where to find my next prospect, I half-heartedly asked God if He had any restaurant in mind.
Turns out, He did, and He told me exactly where to go.
As strange as it seemed to me, I decided to take a chance and go there. I sincerely questioned whether I was hearing from the Lord or my own imagination. Maybe you’ve had that same question?
Turns out, I was seated directly across from an old friend who was meeting with his partner. He asked me to join them.
As it happened, he didn’t need my product… He needed my skill.
I spent the next two days writing a proposal for him that immediately netted him a substantial payout for which I was paid the $1,000 I so desperately needed.
Not long after that, I had a dream where I saw a map with a green dot in the Middle Tennessee area.
I had no idea what it meant, but it created a sense of anticipation in me, so I left Canada and headed to the good old USA to see what God had in mind next.
Upon arriving in Tennessee, I was driving west on I-40 through Nashville when quite unexpectedly God pointed out a building and told me, “That’s where you’re going to work.”
What happened in the next 90 days, I have never seen or heard duplicated by anyone, anywhere.
Although my entire career up to that point had been in sales with mediocre results, God was about to train me from His Word.
Looking back, one thing I’ve learned is that God was training me to recognize His guidance in ordinary life, AND… that guidance usually precedes understanding.
