Four Blood Moons – What Nobody is Talking About!

By Michael Q. Pink

May 24, 2014

blood moons, four blood moons, lunar eclipse

Before I get into what’s troubling me about all this, I want to cover some very basic facts for those who may not know:

  • A blood moon is ALWAYS a lunar eclipse

  • A lunar eclipse is ALWAYS a full moon.

  • Lunar eclipses have happened over 7700 times in the last 5000 years

  • Only a “TOTAL” lunar eclipse can be a blood moon

  • The color of the moon depends on atmospheric conditions at the time. It can range from an orange hue to a coppery color to blood red or even black.

  • You cannot know the color of the “blood moon” until it actually occurs.

  • Total lunar eclipses have occurred about 2700 times in the last 5000 years.

  • A series of four consecutive TOTAL lunar eclipses is called a tetrad

  • Tetrads are less common. We are in our second of eight, this century.

  • Passover and Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles) ALWAYS fall on a full moon.

  • Lunar eclipses at Passover or Tabernacles are not rare.

Full Red Moon With Reflection

Is it a Sign?

Genesis 1:14 declares the heavenly lights are for signs and seasons, days and years. In Joel 2:31 we learn that the sun will be turned to darkness (solar eclipse) and the moon into blood (lunar eclipse) before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. A tetrad is not mentioned in Scripture so it is not a requirement, but still a possibility that the Day of the Lord could come in that season.

The succession of solar and lunar eclipses are meant to be a sign for sure, but not a definite sign that something will happen. The fact that there is a solar eclipse during this tetrad is quite normal because solar eclipses occur an average of 2.4 times per year.

Think of it as one of several conditions that must occur. For it to snow, for example, it must be cold AND there must be precipitation as well. Just because we have cold outside, doesn’t guarantee there will be snow. Just because we have a season of eclipses doesn’t mean that portends the coming of the Lord. Only that it could.

History

As has been rightly claimed, a tetrad of four total lunar eclipses falling on Jewish holidays has only happened three times in the last 500+ years. The claim is that something really significant happened to the Jewish people at that time. Let’s look at that.

The first recorded tetrad in the last 500+ plus years apparently came in 1493-1494. It is often touted as coinciding with the horrific Spanish expulsion of the Jews where they were given two weeks notice to leave the country or die.

The Spanish Jews rushed to leave Spain and many crowded the seaports, filling up the ships with their families and possessions to get out of harms way. Thousands of Jews were mercilessly slaughtered or died as they made haste to evacuate.

Columbus's ShipsAmong those ships leaving Spain at the time of Jewish expulsion of 1492, were the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria under the leadership of Christopher Columbus who that very same year, took many Jews with him and sailed the ocean blue. It is of no small significance that the Jews financed the Columbus expedition and the founding (not the discovery) of America, but that study is for another time.

What I want you to notice is that the four blood moons (and we don’t know if they were really blood red at the time), BEGAN their 18 month progression the YEAR AFTER the Spanish expulsion and Columbus’ trip to America. They could NOT have been a sign for that event.

Signs are signals of future events. You don’t give a signal the day after, (let alone a year after), a major hurricane strikes the coast, warning people about the hurricane that just passed.

If it were the sign of a tetrad, then by definition, it would have to complete its cycle before anyone knew it was a tetrad and then we would look to see what immediately followed that time frame. I am not aware of anything significant.

The next one we are told, coincided with the birth of Israel as a nation. That is probably the most significant event, prophetically speaking, since the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter two. It occurred on May 14, 1948. Immediately, five Arab nations attacked the newly formed nation. There had already been serious fighting since 1947 but all out war began at this time. The war of Israel’s independence as it is called, was officially over in February of 1949.

The first of the four blood moons did not occur in 1948. The first one occurred in the spring of 1949 after the war of independence was over. The other three followed, concluding the tetrad in the fall of 1950. As much as I want it to be a sign of the birth of Israel, the tetrad finished more than two years after the birth of Israel. God does not settle for “close enough” on anything. He is extremely precise.

Some say it speaks to the influx of Jews to Israel after the war of independence, but the problem with that is that the blood moons are considered an omen of judgment. The Jews coming back to the land was a celebration.

That moves us to the third tetrad to fall on Jewish holidays, which occurred in 1967 – 1968. About six weeks after the first blood moon in April of 1967, Israel fought and won the Six Day War. During that time, Israel regained control of its ancient capital Jerusalem, which was another prophetic fulfillment of great significance.

The remaining three eclipses followed the war over the next 16 months. I’m not sure how it can be an omen or sign if the event it is warning about occurs more than a year before the sign of the tetrad is complete.

Total Lunar Eclipse At Dark Night With CloudWe are now in the last tetrad of blood moons that fall on Jewish holidays for this century. If it is a sign, I believe the sign will have to complete its cycle to be a sign. But as I said above, the coming of the Lord does NOT REQUIRE a tetrad, only the solar and lunar eclipses which occur often and will again in 2015.

What is being strongly implied by many prominent Christians is that because two of these eclipses fall on the Feast of Tabernacles, that it most likely predicts the second coming. I will bet my house against yours that it will not! (Note: Don’t take my bet because if I’m right, I get your house. If you’re right, we’ll be gone and it won’t matter.)

Some Uncomfortable Facts

Some blood moon proponents argue that the blood moon tetrads are God’s heavenly sign warning Israel of some important event. So far, I’ve pointed out that the tetrads all came after the event they were supposedly warning about.

Jerusalem 70 ADBut what about some other hugely significant events in Jewish history? Like the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 AD, or the holocaust of World War II which dwarfed the Spanish expulsion in size and scope, or the Yom Kippur war of 1973? Those were all hugely significant events in Jewish history, but no blood moon tetrads. Is anyone else asking these questions? Are we all so gullible as to swallow whatever popular book comes down the pike?

One more uncomfortable fact… There have been four other blood moon tetrads that did fall on Jewish holidays since the resurrection of Jesus Christ. They occurred in 162/163 A.D., 795/796 A.D., 842/843 A.D. and 860/861 A.D. respectively. But nothing of note took place. Say what?!?!?! The 4 blood moon advocates are silent on these dates.

Conclusion

While I do not believe the four blood moons predict the coming of the Lord at this time, I am very aware that there is a confluence of other indicators that indicate a time of trouble is ahead. Jonathon Cahn wrote an excellent book called The Harbinger, which you should read.

He also talks about the Shemitah. That is something very precise and profound and worthy of further study. The next one occurs September 13th of 2015. It is worthy of consideration but it also raises big questions for me, that I have not yet researched and will reserve comment until I have.

I could discuss at length economic cycles and what is known as the war cycle, as well as the fourth turning, which begins around 2016. There seems to be a confluence of cycles all turning around a time frame that begins next fall. I don’t know what’s coming but I do have some strong impressions.

My reason for writing this article is to urge you to think for yourself, do your research and then pray… Pray until you hear from the Lord. Don’t take the shortcut and let someone else do all the hearing for you.

Learn from other leaders, but don’t swallow until you have chewed on it. You might find something they have missed or conveniently ignored. There’s too much at stake to not be discerning and very, very prayerful.

I will share with you in my next blog what came out of my prayer time Friday. What I received was very sobering and worthy of serious consideration. However, like the Apostle Paul said, I only see through a glass darkly.

Take what I say, add it to what you have and prayerfully ask the Lord to speak to you. I would welcome any input from others on this blog. God bless you all.

  • A good post. Straining at gnats can be prophetically dangerous. There are so many other things in the scripture that point to the return of Christ. This gospel of the Kingdom must be preached in all the world…then the end…right now we have the gospel of salvation, heaven and hell…

  • Your bet was funny.!!

Thank you for your research, what you say about these years 162/163 A.D., 795/796 A.D., 842/843 A.D. and 860/861 A.D does make a lot of SENSE. Even though I haven’t herd anyone using the Tetrad blood moons to Predict the 2nd coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, I don’t doubt the fact that people could be using Tetrad blood moons for their crazy predictions now in these days.
I know very little about this topic and I appreciate your research, I look forward to your next post.

I thank God for His Spirit that guides us into all truth. John 16:13

  • Jose Perez;

Thank you for your comment! I am trusting the Lord to reveal more through His Word and by His Spirit. Blessings!

  • Thank you Mike for your incredible insight and leadership, our lives and MC USA are made much richer from the wisdom you impart.

    • I went back and read it again, it seems more evedent than ever, we are in the season of Christ’s return.

      • Hi Chris;

Thank you so much for your kind remarks. As for the season of Christ’s return, I would agree that many things seem to be pointing to that. My concern with the four blood moons message is that they are always presented as a marker of something significant connected to Israel, some kind of sign, when in fact the dates did not match. There are other factors of importance to be watching for, not the least of which is what happens to Israel. BUT, in addition to watching the signs of the times, it is far more important to be in tune with the Spirit, hearing what He is saying about what is going on about us. Blessings to you and Lloyd!

  • Thank you Michael,

I have almost stopped sharing any info about this subject because it always draws so much conjecture that I know to be false or so misunderstood….even though I did not full know or understand all the precise facts you have shared.

You always add to my quest for knowledge with your words.

    Love you~

    • Hi Bea; You always inspire me with your encouragement. Thank you my dear sister-in-law! Love you too!

  • I have been reading several books lately by Messianic Jews who have such an incredible heart to share their faith. Their insights have brought so many things in the Old and New Testaments to life. The Jewish mindset sees the Scriptures through a very different lens, and it has been extremely interesting. The information you have provided here reminded me of some of the things I have been learning. I think so many people today are looking for signs and wonders that they will stretch anything they can to make it mean something it doesn’t. Wise discernment from the Lord is so critical in these days. Thank you so much for posting this article!

    • Hello RaShell and Team Southerland! We have much to learn from our Jewish heritage. The Jews lost the Messiah and the church lost her roots when they went their separate ways. May God grant us the coming together of Jew and Gentile, all as believers in Yeshua, whom we call Jesus the Christ.

  • Thank you Michael for being bold and stepping out, and for saying what no one else seems to be saying.

I love it that you aren’t afraid to question – and to speak up.

    • Thank you Deborah… It’s important to respectfully question and to speak up when it merits it. I’m more concerned about tomorrow’s blog. It’s often difficult to summarize in blog format something that often seems bigger than the blog I’m trying to write.

      Bless you!

  • Right on brother. Several others have said much of what you but you said it best. Unfortunately those that
are trying to make something of theses moons are acting more like false prophets.

    • Thanks Al. I think some folks just want something to be true bad enough that they ignore or don’t see what is right in front of them. Appreciate you posting!

  • Good job Micheal. We need to be vigilant in exposing this rubbish. However they will not only refuse to be accountable – they will just post more. We have to wise up.

  • Yes Michael, well done. I am always amazed at how people will push and squeeze information into their theology and framework, eliminating any data that would negate their perspective. It is the old “Never let the facts get in the way of a good story!”

@Bruce – Fancy meeting you here today.

    • Yes Peter… A common mistake. I call it shoehorn theology because you need special help to make it fit because it really doesn’t fit. Thanks for the post.

  • Blood moons are rare. What is more rare is people sold out for Jesus. When we speak of the Lord’s Second Coming, we fail to emphasize He is coming for a people, A Bride, A Church that is holy and separated from this world and it’s fallen prince. Also so many people will meet Him in a time not expected. How many are dying around us w/o truly knowing Him. Are we HOT for Jesus or lukewarm, just holding on till His return… what a horrific time for those who think they are going to be with Him eternally, only to hear ‘I never KNEW you’. That should wake us up more than any sign in the sky. Thank you MP for the insightful post. Blessings, Keith †

    • Keith… I am in no small distress over the fact that the church is so lukewarm. We don’t have to agree on everything in the body of Christ, but can we not all agree on giving our lives passionately to Jesus Christ? We need true revival in the church, one where we are revived to a position of love and dedication to the Lord, where we truly live for Him, and no one will mistake us for being lukewarm! Thanks for posting.

  • Dear Michael,

Am always learning new things from what God has revealed to you. I also like the way you encourage people to pray and get to hear from God themselves
Thanks and may God continue blessing you .

    Samuel k.gichuru

      • Thank you Samuel. I always want folks to get with the Lord for themselves. We must grow up and become strong in the Lord, helping each other. Thank you for posting my brother!

  • Michael, Thank you for listening to the Spirit of Wisdom, Jesus Christ. His plan is The Fathers plan, Kingdom of God Come, Will of God be Done. You are saying what The Father says in our nation. Bless You.

    • Hi Tim; Nice to see you on the blog my brother. Got your message and look forward to speaking with you this week. Thank you for your supportive words. Blessings!

  • Cheers, Michael! My heart is being stirred to seek Him more and more…Thank you! I was hearing and correlating some fresh ideas with a loved one this week about our Lord’s First and Second Coming. In His First, there was Roman tyranny and harsh leadership, both religious and political, a holy, and wild forerunner, named John who only wanted to prepare a people for their God, and Christ’s baptism and Earthly ministry, ultimate Sacrifice, Resurrection and Ascension. In His Second Coming, a revived Roman empire, hundreds of thousands of passionately pursuing love – sick messengers who rejoice to hear His voice and reveal This Beautiful Messiah, equally – yoked bride, in full agreement with Him as He leads the greatest ministry through His Church in the midst of great trouble and great pressure, before He comes back and fulfills Isa 63, Ps 45, Ps 2 and hundreds more! I find the need grow more trust in His competence to lead us then in man and our adversary ‘ s ability to mislead and deceive. Blessings!

    • Michael… Love the fact that you are passionately pursuing the knowledge of the Lord in the context of relationship with Him. Keep on pressing in and then be open to the very real possibility that some of the expectations of end time events may be very different than what is popular in the Christian community these days.

I asked the Lord a few years ago about coming events… I was bothered that on one hand there were strong voices talking of God’s impending judgment. On the other hand there were voices speaking of good plans, a bright future and blessing.

I asked Him which was true. He spoke very clearly to me in the form of a question and said… “Would you believe it if I told you?”. I later read something similar in Habakkuk 1:5. To be honest, I believe God was saying to me that my current beliefs would make it hard to receive and believe what He has in store. So, my only response is to press into Him, learn of Him, not just in the Word as important as that is, but also in the intimacy of relationship.

      Blessings!

      • Dear Michael,

A most excellent treatise about the blood moons. You spoke good words about Jonathan Cahn and his book, the Harbinger. That book was extraordinary or me.
I would like to confirm that your current beliefs would indeed make it hard for you to receive and believe what he has in store. Like most evangelical Christians (me included) we have been carnal babes in Christ, not spiritual. We have experienced envying, and strife, and divisions and are carnal and have walked as men. We have said we are of Calvin, Luther, you name it.
Our denominations are all of the devil. As evangelicals we have united in a false doctrine of salvation that says, If we accept Jesus Christ as our personal savior we will go to heaven instead of hell when we die. You of course know that idea is not found in the Bible. Its a lie! We can not accept Jesus who is God but he accepts us and all mankind because we are all his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works. Whom he foreknew (conceived) he predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ. All mankind are the children of God because His spirit dwells in each one of us. Jesus is eternal life that lights every man that comes into this word.
Jpanne Bush was right, This gospel of the Kingdom must be preached in all the world…then the end…right now we have the gospel of salvation, heaven and hell… – but that gospel of salvation is not the gospel. There is only one gospel, the gospel of the kingdom.
Michael, you can not accept these words I write because you have been programmed to believe the evangelical lie. And I doubt you will post my comments.

Even so, may the Lord bless you and reveal the the truth to you.

        David Thompson

  • Very informative; you hit the points that stuck out to me: It was all after the fact. Keep up the due diligence. Grace and peace to you.

  • I started listening to the book you recommend, The Harbinger. I am not one to do much fiction reading (or listening), but many commentaries suggest this is more than a fiction novel, but a narrative told using Biblical facts. As I listened I became uneasy in that I really value facts of the Bible – not commentaries or stories so I did research on the book. There is a wide range of critiques online about the book and the author so I think I am going to not finish the book. I especially like the commentary found here: https://graceuniversity.edu/iip/2013/02/13-02-23-1/

I would like to know what you think.

    Thanks,
    Burt

    • Hi Burt… Actually I saw the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GyZZmhE66k&feature=kp and a few interviews with Jonathan Cahn. Didn’t realize his book was written as a novel.

Like you, I value facts, especially those found in the Bible. My take was that we would do well to consider whether history is repeating itself as it so often does. Thought it was worth considering.

  • Thank Michael, it is extremely encouraging to know the amount of time and dedication you commit to and you bold go to very sensitive areas. Thank you and I am sure all your readers as well.

Teachers with big enough hammers can usually put a round peg in a square or a square into a box, there is so much teaching I find it distracts from learning to listen to that small voice when we take the time to pray. And learning to pray in these times when we are surrounded by information overload it is easy for many to take the path of least resistance and put there trust in the doctrine, theology which often leads to division where as Truth unites. If the Elect can be misguided or fooled, how easy is it for those that are not there there yet. What shines through is that you acknowledge that we must do the work and test what we hear. Your humility has been earned not by your deeds but by your personal experiences, trials by fire and what is left is God’s gift to us, not anything we could earn on our own. Being a recent visitor to your blogs, what I would like to see if not already done so, is in depth teaching on how to stay on watch, not get lulled into complacency and how one can share the light you receive as easy as it is to light many candles with one candle. Thank you and we all pray for your continued ongoing research.

    • Hi Richard;

What a thoughtful comment. You are right about some teachers with big enough hammers, how they can usually pound a round peg into a square if they want to. I also agree big time on staying on watch, not getting lulled into complacency. I try to do that daily and hope to inspire others to do the same. God bless you my friend!

      Michael

  • Good morning, Michael!

“Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” (Acts 17:11)

In the tradition and discipline of the Berean Jews, what you exhort in a fresh way is vitally important…should be a continuing call for all believers. And as our Sr Pastor would remind and challenge us always, “don’t simply take a gum that has been chewed by others, learn to also chew a fresh gum to know firsthand.”

I also am learning the lack of practical prophets in our Church nowadays, those who could stand like Nathan before king David and like John the Baptist to the powers that be and the ungodly pop culture…challengers in a godly sense reflecting the Son’s fullness of grace and truth.

May our God continue to lead you along this path….as one of the practical prophets He is using in His marketplace to equip His workers for the spread of the Gospel that is the only Hope for our dying world.

Thanks for your diligent posting, Michael….even if I haven’t met you yet, the journey that I am having with you from your earlier days in your SAW blogposts makes me feel of our closeness in Christ.

Yours because we are His, BenjieC./Manila, Phils.

    • Hi Benjie;

I have enjoyed your insights, comments and words of encouragement over the many years. I am so glad you rejoined the conversation with me again, after my long absence. I feel like we must be friends or long lost brothers, but regardless, because of Him we have been adopted into the same family. You can tell your pastor, I really like his gum analogy. He is 100% right on that!

      Blessings on you my brother,

  • Michael,

I believe the Lord has been renewing (maturing) your mind so you will no longer be seeing through
a glass darkly. You are now beginning to see the Lord face to face spiritually. You are putting away
    childish (carnal) things.
To be carnally minded is death but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
For the carnal mind is enmity with God. It is not subject to the law of God, neither can be.
The inward man delights in the law of God. This is the mystery of Christ in you, the hope of glory!
All men have good and evil natures like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde.
The evil nature entered Adam and Eve when they ate the forbidden fruit. They became carnally
minded and died. Their carnally minded thoughts were separated from God’ s thoughts.
In the gospel of the kingdom, all men’ s thoughts will be reconciled to God’ s thoughts so all men
will know that God loves all creation including plants and animals. And God will save his creation,
including all men and bring all men to the truth so that all men will again be rulers of God’ s
kingdom on earth as in the beginning.
The wolf will dwell with the lamb and the lion will eat hay with the ox. They will neither hurt nor
destroy in all God’ s Holy. And men will study war no more. This just happens to be the
mandate of the the United Nations–Isaiah 2:4 In the garden of the UN building in NYC there is a
statue of a man beating his sword into a plowshare. This statue was created by a Russian man.

    Your in Christ,

    David Thompson

  • It reads like the “blood moon season” often comes just after very significant and life altering events. If that is the case then one may look at the years just preceding last year and this year for greater understanding. Many ancient cultures including the Mayans have declared that we entered the ‘fifth world” on 12/21 12 but it is also believed that not everyone will be aware of the shift until consciousness is “lifted up” sufficiently to perceive the changes that will be obvious to some. Many believe that the “era of peace” has been entered and it will be only a matter of time before all of consciousness has this reality occur to them. Outer events will continue to appear troubled for a time, but that is during a period of deep healing. When the healing is complete the outer world will resemble something much closer to “Thy will be done” on earth.
