There is a River

If you’ve ever driven in a flooded area, you know the warnings about the power of moving water. Cars and trucks can get swept away by water that doesn’t appear to be very deep. I’ve been reflecting on the parallel between the physical laws that explain the power and momentum of flowing water and the spiritual application of what God says about water.
Ezekiel 47 speaks of the water coming from the threshold of the temple in the city of God that becomes ankle deep, then knee deep, then deep enough to swim in. Innumerable Christian songs refer to this river- the river of Life.
This has been a year of breakthrough in my understanding of prayer as a river. In the past, I’ve never felt like a very effective intercessor. My inability to sit still in quiet solitude for periods of time seemed to disqualify me for what I deemed serious prayer. My consolation is that I’m a worshipper. So I’ve provided music for prayer groups and offered many, many prayers through worship.
It’s revelation to me that no matter how we each pray - the style, duration, intensity – we are each a tributary. In John, we’re told that there’s a river of life flowing from every believer. Even if you think you’re only a trickle, a trickle joins with other trickles to form a stream. Streams flow together to become a river and rivers flow to the sea. Ezekiel 47:12 says “Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing."
As we all join our prayers together for strength for Michael and healing for Brenda Pink, we become part of a mighty river. It has the power to sweep away the heavy weight of their circumstances and bring hope and life. Never underestimate the power of moving water.
“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God.” Psalm 46:4
