To Be Sick or Well... (The Choice is Yours)
By
October 6, 2009I want to thank you all for reading, passing on and commenting on my recent blogs concerning healing. Some of you replied to the email directly with a personal note to me, but those are received by my office, simply because I cannot respond to all of them. I did see one from a brother who began by telling me that he loved me and has been blessed by these blogs for 4 years, but that I was completely wrong on this subject.Ê I am sure there are many who feel that way and that's okay with me. If we can walk in love toward one another, that's more important than agreeing on every finer point of our faith. I will invite all who share his view to consider the possibility, no matter how remote it may seem to you, that perhaps I and many others, who see what I see, have climbed a different section of the mountain than you. Perhaps we have plumbed the depths of His Word in different places than you. That wouldn't make us smarter or deeper or anything special at all. It's just that we have explored and experienced something that previously we had not seen, but now we do. Something that previously we argued against or were turned against for whatever reason, but now we have had an "aha" moment and see, as it were, for the very first time, a perspective we may have disdained or at the very least disagreed with only months ago. If you have been a Christian for any length of time now, you have probably already encountered understandings and revelations that stand in opposition to how you earlier believed. That is why I walk softly toward those who disagree with me. I have found that I continue to grow in my understanding of Him and His Word and things I once thought were cut and dried, were in fact, all wet. My wife and I pray almost daily that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ would give unto us a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of our understanding being enlightened, that we may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of His glory of His inheritance in the saints and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power, which He worked in Christ Jesus when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principalities and powers, might and dominion and over every name that is named, not only in this age, but in that which is to come. I would strongly urge all of you to make this a regular prayer from your heart and watch what happens between now and the end of the year! To those of you who wrote words of encouragement and support, I am most grateful. In fact, beyond words. Some of you have never or perhaps only rarely, posted on this blog but you did this time to simply add the word of your testimony and strengthen mine. Thank you for that! For all of you that care and those of you who are searching, I continue to offer up what limited view I have of the wondrous work of Christ. More to come this week...

Romans 12:1-3 My version - "Accept the gifts God has given you, transform your thought process to match His and don't think you have all the answers." We are talking about God after all. The problem with Christians, the church, our country and many companies today is personal responsibility. The problem is that everything is someone else's problem. We expect the government (who some have replaced God with), our church, pastor, parents, spouse or God to fix it. God has mandated personally responsibility from day one. Thanks, Michael, you have helped me this week.

wow from my own experience and what I have seen there are alot of hindu believing christians...I use to believe that way until today.

Michael, I accept this word, I believe it is true. I just have a hard time putting it into practice in my life. What are some steps that we can take to apply this truth? How do we act on God's wonderful salvation when our bank account is negative and there's no business coming in. I really want your advice.

Yes, God can heal, and He does . . . but we have to have right thinking about disease. All this was settled for me when I read "A More Excellent Way, Be in Health" by Pastor Henry Wright. There are spiritual causes to disease, and even if we have the faith for God to heal us, what good is it if the disease comes back because the root is still there? I believe that if the medical community has at least one thing right: Stress is directly related to illness. What causes stress? Could it be all the things God's Word tells us not to have? Things like unforgivenmess, bitterness, anger, self hatred, etc? So, in answer to the question, no, I don't believe like a Hindu! There are spiritual laws and if we break those laws, we have consequences, one of them being illness. On the other hand, ALL of God's promises are appropriated by faith. So, if I have forgive those who have hurt me, let go of grudges and bitterness, and have faith to believe God not only CAN, but WILL heal me, then He will. He's not some bully with His heel poised over the proverbial ant hill . . . He wants to heal us, but even if He does, we need to let go of the things that caused the illness in the first place, and in my humble opinion, much disease can be prevented by being in right standing with God, and in our relationships with people (and ourselves). Just my opinion.

I still what to know how you fit Paul and his 'thorn in the flesh' into this teology. Did Paul have too much unbelif? Did Paul think like a Hinu and expcept it? The cross is about salvation from the penalty of our sin. The cross did not re move all of the consequences of our sin (ravages). This is a hard road.
Gary at 3:41pm EDT - September 22, 2009
I wish or hope you can better develop/explain/unpack your last 2 paragraphs. It lacked clarity. I was hanging on every word, and then your main point became unclear at the end. I loved your other writings this week. I believe what you were writing was very important for me, I just had a hard time understanding you last 2 paragraphs. Keep up the great postss.

Hi Michael, what an intriguing title. Sure got my attention. You wrote a powerful essay today. I have to confess that I have faith in some areas more than others and may have faith for a situation on one instance and in a similar situation seem to not have faith. One thing I know for sure, is that we can't have faith in our faith. Our faith has to be in God and what he has said in his word. PS. I don't know how I got on your mailing list. I thought you were spam for a long time, and then finally opened one of your emails. Now you are one of the bright spots of my day. Thanks!
Jean at 3:46pm EDT - September 22, 2009
Thanks so much for this truth. I agree 100% even tough I have had a chronic condition for almost 9 years. I want a breakthrough just like your wife has had. Would you be able to give any more particulars as to how to 'get' it? As far as I know I do believe. Keep giving us more, we love it. Jane & Ed
Jane P. at 3:53pm EDT - September 22, 2009
Just because you ask God for help or to remove you from a situation doesn't mean you have unbelief. After all Jesus asked His Father that if there was any way "Let this cup pass from me"... As part God, He knew what He had to do for us... As part man, he knew how much he would suffer... Even on the cross He cried out "Father, why have you forsaken me"... Even Jesus, when things were at there worst, thought God had forgotten about him. But we all know how that turned out.
John Jr. at 3:55pm EDT - September 22, 2009
Thank You for opening the door to our hearts and getting us to ask the question "Do I believe"? It is easy to profess that God can....but harder to answer God will. I join some of your other readers in asking the question "How do you reach out and get it"? How do we bring down the promises of God into our life? What causes that shift to take place?

What a great message! I am living proof of the power of faith and the word of God. I was diagnosed with stage 4 Lung Cancer that had spread through out my body, liver, bones, lymph, stomach, pancreas, the doctors gave me 6months to live. I was so sick at the time chemo was not option so they started me on second line treatment pill. The doctors held little hope it would slow down the Cancer but felt he would try something. Sent me home with a box of pain med and said get you affairs in order. Having and 8 year old daughter my first thoughts were to her and my husband, but then I remember the word. God place the right people in my life for this season and they have agreed with me and the word. I started confessing my healing and my faith grew. I really dug into the word to see God's WIll for me. And your right a Father does not want his children sick. He provided healing 2000 years ago on the cross through his son Jesus. We need to reach out and accept the gift. It has been two years and I have been in remission. The doctors don't understand how in the world I am still here. My word to them" I am not in the world, I belong to a kingdom that has no sickness and no cancer." God Bless you

Hi Michael... I too (as you know) am on this journey... I don't begin to have a "formula" but I do know Father and His goodness... and, after all, getting to know Him and what pleases Him is what life is all about isn't it? Isn't that what He desires, intimacy?... Without questions and mystery wouldn't He be reduced to our level rather than bringing us to His? And if we did understand it all, where is the faith... and without it's not our knowledge of Him or our understanding that we must get in order to please Him, but rather the faith (making real what is unseen) that allows us to please Him. Thanks Michael again for sharing your wisdom and walk with me... and us! Tom
Tom at 4:28pm EDT - September 22, 2009
I'm sorry but what exactly do you think Hindu's believe? That was the title of the blog. They don't believe in responsibility?
Brad at 4:40pm EDT - September 22, 2009
I'm also hungering to know more on healing, etc., which leads me to share this on a my friend's mother whom the doctor's told she had cancer, again. The women in her family have had cancer and some have died from it -- all Christian women. Well, this lady upon hearing the bad news got indignant and just told the doctor that NO she didn't have any cancer and she was not gong to accept it, and she started declaring the Word. She just refused to accept it and stood on the Word continually. It has been a few years now and my friend tells me that up to today this lady is healthy, no pain, nothing physically is wrong and she has NO cancer. She just refused to believe that her God was not in control of her life. Another lady from an Hispanic church had a tumor in her stomach (doctor verified) and got so mad that she started confessing the Word and believing God for a miracle. Not too long after while she kept believing God she got sick to her stomach and threw up this awful-looking thing (tumor) and she's well and healthy since. She had long before stopped going to the doctor and just trusted the Lord for her healing. Not to say that the Lord doesn't use doctors because He does -- I'm a living testimony to that. I think we all know God heals, but there's so much more to understand than what we know, and it's just going to take more asking, seeking and knocking to find out. Blessings to all!

I guess I am the nay-sayer today. A Biblical truth is truth for all time periods and for all cultures; it is just not for the here-and-now. This 'God wants everyone healthy' doctrine just won’t work today in Sudan (Christians regularly killed, etc because of their faith) or Orissa, India (hundreds of homes and churches burned down, raped women, death). It didn’t work for Paul (the Apostle) in the 1st century. I have asked several times how all of this fits with Paul and his 'thorn in the flesh'. I suppose that he had too much unbelief. Yes God can heal – after all, he is God. He can do what ever he likes. He also repeatedly says that we are to expect trials in our life (financial, health, relationship, etc). Why are we to expect trials if we shouldn’t be having any of those trials? Some will be healed and some won't be. Some will be wealthy and some won't be. Some will be wise and some won't be. I find no Biblical promises that all Christian are to be well, wealthy and wise. [The context of the "By his strips we were healed" verse is one of spiritual matters not physical matters.]
Gary Geppelt at 4:41pm EDT - September 22, 2009
I have been healed by God so I do wish to comment. Many of us have unrepentant sin in our lives which allows the enemy access and can block our healing. We must confess and repent, it mught be unforgiveness, bitterness, lying, financial dishonesty, unbelief, sexual sin..whatever it is God will help us to overcome it if we get honest with him. It may take humbling ourselves to ask for help from a friend in the Body of Christ or a pastor who can help with deliverance. Also sometimes when we are healed the enemy comes back on us again with symptoms that cause doubt and hopelessness. We have to continually claim our healing and fight for our healing against the enemy. If we stay steadfast and repentant we will be healed. I know this for a fact as I have been healed and am a witness to it. God is good, all the time.

So why the swipe at Hindu's? I know plenty of "Christians" who resign themselves every day to being some sort of ping-pong ball living at the mercy of a "wrathful God." Gag. If we are Children of God then we are living breathing experiencing extensions of God. If you believe that God is omniscient and all-powerful then there is nothing beyond God. The only thing that God does not impose upon us if His/Her/It's WILL. We must exercize our will, i.e. the CHOICE
Deborah Adler at 5:56pm EDT - September 22, 2009
CONT.... THE CHOICE to see God within us. Moving, breathing, having God's existence through us... that's what we have to do. We are not pawns that exist outside of God. We are Gos Expressing, Experiencing It's Magnificent Creation. When we open ourselves to know that, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE.
Deborah Adler at 5:58pm EDT - September 22, 2009
Gary Why do you think Paul's thorn in the flesh was sickness? Why do you think God did not remove it? The bible doesn't say either of those things! God specifically told Paul "My grace is sufficient" which meant Paul had the authority, through God's grace, to take care of it (a messenger of satan) himself - just as Michael is saying here: WE must take responsibility and do our part. Good word today, Michael. Looking forward to the next segment. I wrote a related article you can read here: http://www.faithmama.com/?p=49

His/Her/It's Will? Yikes. John Jr. - I wanted to respond to your interpretation of Jesus' cry of "Father, why have you forsaken me?" My understanding of that moment is that that is when, bearing the full burden of all the world's sin, Jesus bore the separation from God that we all would have had. His cry was the anguish of that separation. I have a hard time believing Jesus thought God forgot him - that separation had to occur for bearing our sins. I hope I'm making sense...

I have been really interested in these last e-mails on healing. My grandson is autistic and I would really love to see him healed along with some people in my church who have cancer. A scripture that keeps coming to my mind lately is James 5:16 "Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." Your e-mails have provoked much thought about faith and unbelief. Please keep them coming.
Marian at 6:32pm EDT - September 22, 2009
Lorisa... It has been my understanding for sometime and I have heard it taught by several Pastors that it we are both right... It was because at that moment when he was bearing the shame and sin of the world that God turned his back to (not on) Jesus and because the 2 were 1 Jesus felt God turn his back because God was demonstrating that the act of the crucifixion was literally putting the sin of the world behind him.
John Jr. at 6:53pm EDT - September 22, 2009
Michael, for many years I had believed like a Hindu...but as I had a Grace Encounter, and The Holy Spirit empowering gifts in me , one being healing, I had to un learn, what I had learned in both colleges I attened. God is God and He alone decides how and when He works... the scriptures are a testimony of what Jesus said and what He did moved by the Holy Spirit. He was totally dependant on the Father and Spirit, "I only do what I see My Father Doing", So if He bore our Sins in His Body on the Tree" and " All who were sick were healed, then is Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever? He healed then and heals now...our part is to believe and ASK.

You are right on. I have been a Christian for almost 60 years. I have struggle much to learn and apply what you are saying. Our God is a loving God beyond our imagination. God wants us to become men of faith. Faith grows just like muscles. You have to exercise them for them to grow or they wither away to nothing. It really is worth the effort. God bless you all, Larry
Larry at 9:45pm EDT - September 22, 2009
Michael, I have been thinking/believing along these lines for some time now but have not experienced nor seen the gift of healing to the extent I have been expecting. But the night of the day I read your post that referred to Andrew Wommack's series, I retired for the night with my husband who is in need of much healing. Just as I was about to fall asleep, I became aware of Jesus' presence on/in me and knew in my spirit that what you are saying is true. This only lasted a brief moment, but I am confident that God is doing a work in me to remove unbelief and it won't be long before I will be seeing healings like never before. Thank you for putting these encouraging words out there. I need them very much to keep from losing heart and hope.
Teresa at 10:03pm EDT - September 22, 2009
It is incredibly WRONG of us to take the bad things that happen to us and put Gods name to it. It is also incredibly BOLD of us to think we can take His written Word and control Him in such a way that He adheres to our interpretation of His Word. Most if not all of the great men of the scriptures came through very bad circumstances and God used that for good. Jesus said "blessed is the man that is not offended because of me" If we will take the negative circumstances and refuse to be offended or blame God for it He will take what was meant for evill and turn it into good. The greatest example being Jesus on the cross. If we are not hearing from God why we are in the situation that we are in and try to figure out the mind of God we have a better chance of winning the lottery. As in the example of Job our position should always be "Blessed be the name of the Lord" Blessings

You need a Spirit-renewed mind, to fully grasp the potential for miracles that exists for every believer. All things are possible! Believe! quote from Bill Johnson..Pastor of Bethel Church
Tim Fox at 10:56pm EDT - September 22, 2009
I've been reading with fascination the different perspectives we as Christians have on this topic. It's amazing, and very thought provoking. I asked my pastor for his input and this was his reply: I believe the missing point is the Final Resurrection and the New Heaven and New Earth. That is tha moment at which all that has entered into the world through human sin will be completely undone. Just as we do not instantly or always win our battles with sin, neither do we will sickness. Not every alcoholic or drug addict that comes to Christ is instantly delivered of their addiction...some are, many continue a life-long struggle. I do not know why...what I do know is that God has undone human death and sin in the Cross and Resurrection of Christ...and on the Last Day that act will find its final fulfillment for the entire Creation and their deliverance will be complete. God does, in His love and grace, generously give us foretastes of that final restoration. Sometimes people are healed; many faithful believers find victories over the sins that enslave them. But everyone who is healed eventually dies; everyone who finds some victory over sin eventually experiences the death that sin brought into the world. God in His mercy allows death, because He does not want His beloved creatures to live forever in this damaged condition. (Genesis 2) Could God have done it another way...no, I don't believe so, because God is Love and Love does not over-rule the choices of another...to do so would have be contrary to His nature in the same way that God cannot sin because He is holy. What am I saying in a few words...the blogs about healing (and the larger perspectives on finance) seem to me to be remarkably short-sighted - focused on now without the glorious backdrop of Eternity. Paul himself said, "If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men." 1 Corinthians 15:19. A friend of mine said it this way: I enjoy the taste of Hershey's Kisses; but I know that eventually I will have the run of the whole chocolate factory! Still reading and looking forward to more. Whether I agree with one or the other, it centainly clarifies or maybe exposes my own beliefs. Thanks Michael and everyone else!

I love this journey that you are sharing and your message today - really made me stop and take notice. Thank you. The Lord is really revealing to me the scripture that'Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks," and "Life and death are in the power of the tongue." When we can get to that place - where we have total faith in the power of the Word - and all the promises of God - we will be able to speak to our mountains, take authority over the work of the enemy and rebuke sickness and disease. We will stand on what the Word says instead of what the Dr. or family speak. The big step for me is acknowledging that I serve a good God - the Father of Light in Whom there is no darkness at all, who wishes above all things that I prosper and be in health even as my soul prospers. I refuse to accept that my God needs to use any disease or sickness to teach me a lesson. My God is good. Amen Looking forward to learning and sharing so much more. Blessings

Mike, thank you for remind me that God never leave me nor forshake me. I had wrong God. Last week I've lost my wallet and the thief came to my house. I always thought that God knows everything that happenned in our life (Rom 8:28). And God has a purpose so I experience this thing. But now I realize that God doesn't want me to loss anything, as I don't want my child to loss anything. I just need to pray so God can send His angel to protect me.

I've read through all 38 responses. The great news is that this thread has everyone thinking about the meaning of what Jesus has done and is doing for us. My further additions - the faith healing belief seems to be based on a view that requires God to be good as we define good. I gotta say that is a small God view and I hope this will challenge you. God is a whole lot more concerned with our spiritual health and our relationship to him than he is about our financial or physical health. This big God will use everything to His purposes in the end. Yes, even evil. This is the God who sacrificed His own Son after all. It would have cost Him a lot less to simply annihilate the planet and us. He loves us that much. You don't think He would use pain, sickness to teach us? Read some C.S. Lewis. Get the "Canvas" video from Andy Stanley and Louie Giglio. God is somewhat bigger than any of us think! (Present company included). I said in an earlier post, I've seen God's healing of my own wife. We prayed and He answered with healing in that instance. Will she never be sick and die? Will I pray for her? If she is not healed, will it by my fault because I lacked faith? Or will I trust God? Please don't set yourself up for a loss of faith. This is a really, really big God. He does what He wants and He is all love. Simply - this isn't about us. It's about Him. Check out John 11. Lazarus got sick, they told Jesus, and Jesus waited, for a couple of days, for His purposes, to go and raise him from the dead. His purpose: So that He would be glorified and we would believe in Him and the Father. He used sickness and death for His purposes. BTW, if anyone had faith that God can heal, it was Lazarus. Yet, I don't see him among us. I think he got sick and died. Come to think of it, so has every other Christian for the last 2000 years - except, well, us. Bonnie's pastor put it clearly. We are looking at our tiny selves instead of an unimaginably huge, power, personal God. I know Michael and most reading this believe in that God. Thanks for a conversation.

Michael, I've been thru many things in life over the years, and have come to the realization that God loves us so much and wants what's best for us always. When I pray, I ask Him for what I think is best for me....but I always end my prayer with not my will, but Thine be done, because I trust in Him to know what's best for me now and my future......so I can go forth with confidence and joy knowing He's in control. I've realized, that He does not look at the here and now, but for eternity....Just as Christ wanted the cup to pass by Him if possible to go to the cross, but He was willing for God's will be done because He knew God knew what was best....and I am so grateful for his willingness to do God's will....so that we may have eternal life.....we too, many times, are only considering the here and now.....when really it's all about eternity.....that's where we are all going to spend the rest of our lives.....and my desire is to bring as many with me to heaven......we save for retirement, etc......and make such a big deal about it, but it's only for what? 100 years at the most? Eternity is forever, and we have two places to go......that is why, in every decision we make we should consider......eternity.....Every day I get up, instead of saying "God, these are my plans, come with me....", I now pray each morning...."God, you have my life, use it this day to make a difference so souls may find eternal salvation through you......" and I trust Him to guide, direct and see me through all of my life's decisions.....His word promises that if we seek His kingdom first, all these things....food, clothing and shelter.....shall be provided.....it's an "eternal" view, not a "here and now" only view of things....and it brings me a peace and joy that until I viewed things this way, I was in constant anxiety and worry about this life, my deicisions, and future....If we only will take the view God has....eternity.....and truly trust and obey His word......will we find peace, joy and contentment in this life.....God is AWESOME!

I praise God that He cares not only about the eternal, but also the temporal! I praise God that sickness and poverty are part of the curse and never His will! I praise God every good and perfect gift comes from Him! I praise God for what Jesus did for us so we can rise up in the authority He gave us and walk in abundant life (spirit, soul & body) HERE on earth! John 10:10 God is good!

It is all about our faith in His word. Not "What do we want to believe, but to believe His word, period." His word says "By His strips were ARE healed" Either you believe that all of His word is truth; not just if it makes you feel good about yourself. There are times that we need to know when we have made a mistake and we can depend on the Holy Spirit to let us know. That is His purpose. Stand strong in your faith.

Hi Sir I also can testify to this,I married for 8yrs and we've been trying to have children but nothing happened.I went to the doctors and they told me I develop cycsts in my womb so I will not be able to conceive I had 3 operation which had no effect. I took my bible and asked God in prayer to say a word over my situation,I continued took fasting until one day I said this" God you're the one who caused multiplication in the garden, you also blessed Hannah,I know that you will bless me too. I thank you for this its done and my joy is fulfilled by me asking this in Jesus name. Tell you this the imposible has happened in our life I'm expecting a baby boy. Things will change and materialise in us the more we develop a God concious mind in us. the more we hoped in Him the easier we drew the blessing to ourselves

Well Michael, you have hit a nerve in the Body of Christ with this post. And the reactions tell that the teaching in the church on this has been varied and often the interpretation of the minds of men. I have heard many theories preached, but until I received revelation from the Lord through His Word, I was confused and full of doubt. Folks, don't expect Michael to be your 'guru', ask the Father and His Spirit will reveal the truth to you personally. Bless y'all.

By the way, I didn't mean Michael is wrong!!! I mean revelation received direct from our Heavenly Father enhances the relationship and intimacy we have with Him.

Ah, well said, Michael. I've often wondered why the belief system of some of the most dedicated Christians I know borders on fatalism, and why, they bother to pray at all if everything that happens is part of "the plan." I've heard it said that the Hindu believes if you see a man lying in the dirt, you should kick him--after all, why should we, who are merely himan, be more kind to him than God?

That's exactly right. I thought this way as well, then I was angry with God when things didn't happen. For twenty years I was upset because God didn't heal my baby and he died, I know all the arguments yes He could have healed my baby, it wasn't His will, maybe my boy would have grown and never accepted Christ, Baloney! The fact is "by His Stripes we are healed" we do have responsibility. I was awakened from sleep one evening with this thought burning in my mind.."Don't confess what you Wish God would do, confess His word and you know God will do". That has set me free. By the way God can handle our anger He is not afraid of it.

Hey all... I so appreciate all of your excellent feedback. There have been a number of issues raised that I will try to respond to in coming days. I agree with Chrissie who suggested you not expect me to be the 'guru' on this, but rather to ask the Father and His Spirit to reveal truth. Amen to that! Then there was the link that Tina Marino posted http://www.faithmama.com/?p=49 which I thought was excellent! Blessings on you all! Michael
