What Are People Saying About You?

Today's message is a guest entry from my good friend, David G. Johnson, founder of Epiphany Marketing. David G. Johnson"Do not curse the king, even in your thought; Do not curse the rich, even in your bedroom; For a bird of the air may carry your voice, And a bird in flight may tell the matter." (Ecclesiastes 10:20 NKJV) In today's consumer-oriented, buyer-driven marketplace, many businesses still live under the illusion that they have control of their own marketing. What about yours? Don't misunderstand me. If you (or someone in your company) doesn't take the initiative to develop an understanding of your marketplace, hone an effective message, and actively get that message out, it's not going to happen by itself. But you're still not in control... your customer is. Why? Because the world of today is heavily weighted in favor of the individual. Your customers and prospects choose when and where they will tolerate hearing from or about you and your business. Understanding them and their preferences and offering the right options is now more crucial than ever before. But perhaps just as significantly: they are publishing their thoughts. And their thoughts are arguably just as likely to be heard as yours are, if not more so, particularly where it counts: where your other prospects and customers will hear about it. They "tweet," write web-based reviews, update their "friends" on Facebook, and participate in online discussion forums. This is why large corporations today employ teams of "brand management" people who monitor blogs and other Web 2.0 sites like YouTube, Twitter, and local search sites to proactively find out what's being said about them so that they can address it. Of course this means that we -- whether we serve consumers or other businesses -- must be as on guard as ever about what kind of service we're providing to our customers. But it's also why small businesses have a tremendous advantage over big companies: we can participate directly. If, that is, we know what to do, where to look, and what tools to use. To Be Continued... Special Note from Michael Pink: Watch your inbox and mark your calendar for this Thursday evening, August 13th... I've invited David to join me in a special educational webinar to help all of us learn how social media can be used to grow your business, and advance your message! You won't want to miss it... ÊI'll be sending your invitation soon!

The social media is another innovation that the "wolves" are using to promote their products. Despite the legislation that requires that the truth be told in commerce such as truth in lending, truth in advertising etc. , It seems to me that lies, deception and manipulation continue to be the order of the day in product promotion. For example Tiger Woods' Buick advertisement was a testimonial lie. He did not choose to buy a Buick as the ad implies. I read that he got paid $6 mil for that ad. Most every day I get some ad on the Internet for some program, many from alleged Christians, that will teach me how to get rich through marketing of my product. I just saw Benny Hinn on TV masterfully presenting the manipulation to: "make a vow to God and send him the money". Robert Tilton used to promote a vow for $1000 to be sent to him. But Benny Hinn mentions a $10,000 vow. These dudes misapply scripture telling people that one way to get God to move to solve a person' s personal problems is to make a vow to God like Hannah did. God honered her vow and she gave birth to Samuel. If God moves on a person to make a vow to get something from God then so be it. But to make a vow to God and send the money to aTV pastor is just manipulation to raise money for his ministry which may or may not be of God. I think the mark of the devil beast in marketing is lying, cheating, stealing, extorting and exploiting people for the sake of $profit. This is not to say God does not want us to make profits. The parable of the talents shows that he does want us make profit. But the way we do it must be in concert with God' s kingdom principles and not in pandering to peole's needs as the wolves (Pagans) do. Creating a sense of urgency to buy a product by saying there are only a few left when others can easily be produced is a lie and not a kingdom principle. Moreover, any product that is produced and marketed must be in accordance with God' s will and purpose to restore his kingdom on earth. Thus endeth my rant for the day. David; The wolves may well use social media. They also drive cars and eat ice cream, get married and have kids.
Michael Pink at 5:28pm EDT - August 5, 2009
That’s an excellent point, David; many wolves do take advantage of social media, as well as many other forms of communication, to take unfair advantage of people. Of course, our goal is to learn how to use the social media for good purposes that will honor God and help our businesses to thrive in honest, reputable ways. Thanks for sharing.

@Renetter, thanks! Looking forward to having you with us! @David Thompson, you have a valid point regarding deceptive marketing practices. Hopefully all of us as believers will be wise about the wolves and also those of us in business will understand who and what to copy. That said, the medium is completely neutral. They speak the English language to deceive. It certainly doesn't make the English language in any way evil. I'm not sure you were necessarily attacking the medium... perhaps you just made an observation that there was plenty of less-than-desirable activity on the medium. Unfortunately, the Body of Christ has -- at least in recent memory -- been notoriously slow to adopt new technology. I believe these new communication methods are just as God-inspired as the printing press. It embarrasses me to think of the days when the FCC was handing out Television licenses for free to whoever wanted one... at the same time that preachers across America were claiming that the television was the, "devil's box." God help us. We sure need it... otherwise we can be just plain stupid sometimes. That particular mistake has cost us millions upon millions of dollars as we've purchased television time from the people smart enough to own the licenses. May we learn to stake out territory and deliver value in every medium!

Michael, I realize your brief response may not be intended to agree with or endorse what I wrote. But the fact that you responded shows me some modicum of respect for what I wrote and for that I thank you. Its interesting you mention that wolves eat ice cream and marry. These are natural things that men do that Jesus said would be occuring before his second return just as occurred in the days of Noah before the great flood. Regarding the natural aspect of marriage, Jesus answered the Sadducees in response to their question about marriage in the resurrection, saying you do err, not knowing scripture, for in the resurrection they neither marry or are given in marriage but they shall be like the angels. This tells me that in God' s kingdom that will be completed at the resurrection there will be no more marriage with all its bickering bliss. There shall also be no more war and no more evangelists trying to get people to "know the Lord" for all will then know him as it says in Jeremiah 31:34. This is another indication of the universal nature of God' s kingdom salvation. With regrad to wolves, the truth is that all mankind are indwelt by wolves as well as by sheep. The sheep are the seed or influence of God in all men that does not and cannot sin and the wolves are the seed or influence of Satan that causes mankind to sin. St. John elaborates on this truth in 1John 3:4-10. St. Paul addresses these two seeds in 2Corinthians 4:16 where he writes,"but though our outward man perish, our inward man is renewed day by day. Romans 7:22, it says the inward man serves the law of God but there is another law in his members (body) warring against the law of his mind... This internal warfare between the seed of satan and the seed of God in all men first began in the Garden of Eden when Eve allowed herself to be deceived by the Satanic serpent. At that point the selfish seed of the devil was planted into Adam and Eve such that they died carnally, not spiritually, as the church erroneously teaches. Romans 8:6 says to be carnally minded is death but to be spiritually minded is life and truth. Its not possible for a man' s spirit to die. It returns to God who gave it and mortal bodies return to the dust of the earth from whence they were made. The redemption and salvation of God is to remove the seed of the devil from mankind and thereby save and free mankind from the devil's influence. As I write these truths, I know it riles the flesh of some readers and makes them very angry to the point that they would rent their garments and desire to stone me. But that' s OK. I cannot retreat from the truth God has revealed to me. In His Majesty' s Secret Service, David Thompson

I've recently gotten on the social media bandwagon and look forward to learning more about how to use Twitter effectively. I admit, I don't get it yet. But BeverlySpeaks is on the playing field, trying to determine how to say it in 144 characters or less.
Beverlydru at 4:07pm EDT - August 6, 2009
Hi @Beverlydru, Thanks for your comment. Glad to see you're using Twitter. Looking forward to sharing with you!

Hi David and Michael, when I read the title of this blog, I was kind of hoping that the answer would be that it was not wise to Twitter. I say this just because I will now need to learn how to do so. Yikes! But I'm up for it and looking forward to your webinar. Thanks for all you do.
Yvonne C. Hyde at 11:30am EDT - August 7, 2009
David, I'd like to reinforce what you are saying 100%. I actually looked for Michael several times on twitter in months past and was curious his take on the subject. Great to see your alliance. It will amplify Michael's effectiveness reaching certain groups for sure. I have a Kingdom-minded audience around the world as well which would respond to your messages. We have recently posted on Social Media which may interest some of your readers and reinforce at http://bit.ly/MXBGG. (So you don't mistake this for being serving - we have shared your post here with thousands already - you can check traffic.) Let's think bigger than that and connect. Maybe you would also share our link? Take a look at: http://bit.ly/MXBGG I will aim to be on your call this Thursday. In Christ and to Your Success, Rick
