How to Hear God Without Being Led Astray

Jesus said in John 16:13 that the Holy Spirit would “lead us into all Truth.” A lot of people get into trouble when discerning the difference between the Holy Spirit and “the voice of a stranger”. How many times have you heard someone say that God told them to do something you believed to be crazy? And to your surprise, sometimes it really was God. As long as it doesn’t contradict Scripture, you often have to wait and see.
How much sense did it seem to make when Jesus told the disciples to feed the 5,000 with one boy’s lunch or for Peter to walk on the water? Did that appear rational? However, there are many who respond to the voice of a stranger and think it’s God; so how do we protect ourselves from dangerous deception?
If your spouse goes away on a trip and writes you a love letter, do you not hear his/her voice as you read the words? The same principle applies with God. The more time you spend in His Word, the more familiar you become with not only His ways, but with the sound, the feel and the inner knowing of His voice. His words are spirit and truth and the more time you spend in them and they in you, the more familiar you become with His voice and the less likely you will have a train wreck following the voice of a stranger.

This was perfect timing, I was just talking with an business associate that is having a tough time with some life changing business decisions and whether or not the timing is right with God's purpose. Scripture is always the best resource. THANK YOU!

Thank you for this site, it's awesome & it is something I look foward to each day. Question : Has anyone ever heard the Lord speaking to them, giving a definitive answer, yet hesitation set in, then perhaps some skepticism over whether to actually do what you've been told?

For a long time I wondered about this very question. Since I have been making a regular habit each morning of being in the word, I've had much less trouble discerning the voice of God as opposed to the voice of a 'stranger'. I find that when I just sit and quietly listen for answers to my questions the answers are given to me and I have no problem realizing who they are coming from. I had not put the two things together until I read your article today. Thanks!

When I was going thru some very painful times, in a completly broken state, I could \"hear\" God say, with out a doubt, \"Be still, and know that I am God\". Now to me, that said that He had the situation under control and it would all work out in His time. Some 12 years later, I am still looking for His intervention. At times, my heart has doubted, but He has been faithful in everything else, and I return again and again to His promise.

Michael, These are life changing words written, so I hope all will read them again. The disapline of quite moments and scripture study are crucial to our walking in the Spirit. How many of us get alone time to just sit and listen in the lap of Abba? I am challenged and fighting to loose the distractions. Sitting and listening are not of the world, but busyness is seen as productive. Our friends and family can not teach us to sit and listen, only the Holy Spirit - I am asking God to put the desire in my heart to spend quiet time listening. Read again: The more time you spend in His Word, the more familiar you become with not only His ways, but with the sound, the feel and the inner knowing of His voice. His words are spirit and truth and the more time you spend in them and they in you, the more familiar you become with His voice and the less likely you will have a train wreck following the voice of a stranger.

Thank you Michael for pursuing this question further about discerning among those voices. I believe that we should remember that no one is an island and we do not have to guess by ourselves; in fact, Jesus Jesus set up His Church to assist us too, and security is found in the multitude of counselors.

replying to Jack's question: yes; once recently the Lord wanted me to give a word of encouragement to someone who had spoken in church as was taking a leap of faith. i wasn't sure God wanted me to give the word of encouragement or if it was my own desire to do so because Caleb is also my son's name. so, i asked Him: \"God if you want me to go and talk to Caleb, show me someone wearing red.\" before i could finish the thought, boom, boom, boom! i saw 3 people wearing red. so, i went over and the fellow practically cried when i spoke to him and he thanked me profusely. i know it sounds a little goofy, but that's where i am with God and He meets you where you are with what you need. Like a friend once told me: \"God knows how to communicate with you so that understand the message.\"
