Choosing Your Guiding Principles

By

August 2, 2006

On day two, God created the heavens, the very seat of His authority, the very place of His throne from which the law of God goes forth. His laws are indicative of His ways and for the purpose of our discussion the next few days; we are referring to His ways as “guiding principles”. Others call them values.

On yesterday’s post, I asked, “What values will you guide your vision with?” You might be tempted to say that you will guide that vision and steward that vision with Biblical principles. That’s a step in the right direction, but which ones? All of them? How many are there? You see, it can get rather complicated when you start to drill down. While it is said there are 613 Jewish laws, Jesus was able to boil man’s responsibility in those laws down to two principles: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength: And…You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

When it comes to how God guides His universe, it seems that there are a handful of guiding principles mentioned in Scripture that are far reaching in their scope and easily, and perhaps wisely, adapted to Scripture. For the next several days, we will identify each of the dominant seven guiding principles I have found in Scripture and how we can apply them to our business. I figure if they’re good enough for God to use for His enterprise we call planet Earth, then they are more than good enough for our enterprises.

This is very powerful. I have enjoyed this series so far and I expect that I will enjoy it going forward as well. I look forward to your message each day. I have one sort of nit-picky comment on today's message. I believe that there is evidence in scripture that Jesus considered the verse quoted to be ONE principle, not two, i.e. two sides of the same coin, but one coherent, irreducible, inseparable priniciple. Recall, this was Jesus' response to the question \"What is the greatest commandment?\" (singular) In His two part answer, I believe that Jesus was giving us not only what to do (love God), but also how to do it and to show evidence of our obedience (love each other as ourselves). One principle - what do you think?

Thank You for your dedication to brining God's Word, Law, & Love into the marketplace! Your ministry is truly an inspiration guided by Christ! \"To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgement, and equity; To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man, knowledge and discretion. A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: --Proverb 1:2-7

Greg; Very good point. Have never considered that Jesus was giving us two sides of one coin. Your reasoning makes sense to me. On the other hand, though Jesus was asked which ONE commandment was the greatest, He summarized His statement by saying \"On these two commandments, hang all the law and the prophets.\" Either way, you remind us of the importance of translating our love for God into love for each other. Thank you!
